Lessons from Ukraine war: UK investing nearly $6 bln in drones for its army
The United Kingdom is investing 4.5 billion pounds ($5.7 billion) in drones for its armed forces, reports Sky News.
The decision was made based on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
The drone strategy will involve all branches of the British armed forces experimenting with unmanned systems, testing and evaluating their effectiveness.
"The conflict in Ukraine has been an incubator for new ways of war and we need to learn and implement those hard-fought lessons," said defense procurement minister James Cartlidge...Ultimately, this is about learning the lessons from the Ukrainian frontline," said Defense Procurement Minister James Cartlidge.
Drone coalition
On December 12, 2023, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, and his colleague from Latvia, Andris Spruds, discussed the creation of a drone coalition. The Ukrainian government official thanked the Latvian side for the relevant initiative. As Spruds said in January, more than 20 countries have already joined the drone coalition.
According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the group of Alliance countries wants to hand over one million drones to Ukrainian defenders as part of military aid.
At the same time, the head of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, is sure that drones will not bring a decisive advantage to either side during the war in Ukraine.
