France has once again seen high-level government reshuffles. President Emmanuel Macron has decided to reinstate as Prime Minister the politician who only recently resigned and announced plans to leave the executive branch, according to a statement from the Élysée Palace.

French President Emmanuel Macron has reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister. The move came as a surprise, given that just four days earlier, Lecornu had officially resigned and publicly stated he had no intention of continuing to lead the government.

The Élysée Palace announced the new appointment immediately after the 48-hour period expired - the time Macron had given himself to choose a successor. In the end, the president decided not to look for a new candidate and entrusted the position once again to the former prime minister.

Political context

Experts link Macron’s decision to the lack of a compromise figure capable of quickly stabilizing the cabinet. After Lecornu’s resignation, France’s political landscape was left in a state of uncertainty.

The Bureau of the French National Assembly rejected an initiative from the France Unbowed party to impeach President Emmanuel Macron. According to reports, the motion was supported by 104 left-wing lawmakers, including members of the Ecological and Social and Socialists, and Allies groups.

President Emmanuel Macron recently emphasized the importance of adhering to international law during discussions on a proposed reparation loan for Ukraine worth €140 billion. On the sidelines of the EU leaders’ summit in Copenhagen, he backed the stance of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who had earlier criticized the European Commission’s initiative.
