Details are not yet available.
Threat of a new war
The threat of an escalating conflict between Israel and Lebanon emerged following a strike by the Iran-funded Lebanese militant group Hezbollah on the Israeli town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights. The rocket hit a soccer field, killing more than 10 people and injuring over 30.
In response, on July 30, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike on the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a statement declaring that Hezbollah had crossed a red line.
Lebanon's Health Ministry reported that the Israeli strike on Beirut resulted in the deaths of a woman and two children, with 68 others injured. The Israeli Army claims to have eliminated top Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr.
On August 31, in Tehran, Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas movement supported by Hezbollah, and one of his guards were killed. It remains unclear whether Haniyeh died from an airstrike or a bomb planted in the building. Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the attack, though Israel has not officially claimed responsibility. Iran has threatened a severe response.
