Today, on December 17, Latvia announced a partial inspection of the combat readiness of the National Armed Forces units, Delfi reports.

According to the source, the purpose of this decision is to test the combat readiness of military units by training their capabilities. The improvements will be implemented if necessary.

As part of the combat readiness check, military equipment and personnel of the Armed Forces of Latvia will be moved to different places in the country to perform their assigned tasks.

Such an inspection is planned in advance but is unexpected for the units. It is not related to changes in the security environment or other events.

Conscript service in Latvia

Military service is mandatory in Latvia for men aged 18 to 27. It lasts for 11 months. As of 2024, women can perform conscript service on a voluntary basis.

Military exercises with the armies of NATO member states will begin in September in Latvia.

The Latvian government has also adopted amendments to the law on military service. They will allow foreign nationals to serve in the Latvian army in case of mobilization.
