Latvia to build border barrier with Belarus by end of year
By the end of December, the construction of the fence on the land sections of the border between Latvia and Belarus will be fully completed, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia.
Minister of Internal Affairs Rihards Kozlovskis and Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens, during a working visit, visited the border between Latvia and Belarus.
During the visit, it was concluded that the construction of the fence on the land sections of the border is progressing according to plan and will be completed by December 30 of this year.
Currently, 110.1 km of autonomous fencing, or 98% of the planned volume for this year (112 km), has been built. The construction of the fence on the land border with Belarus by the end of 2023 is identified as one of the government's priorities in Latvia.
Plans for the next year
It is noted that project work has also been completed along stretches of public waters, where a patrol lane of 33.5 km will be created.
Deforestation has already begun in these areas, which belong to the state, allowing the construction of the fence to start earlier. The fence in these areas is planned to be completed by July 2024.
On the other hand, in the Daugava section, where six communication towers are planned with access roads, as well as the construction of a patrol path 16.7 km long, project work is ongoing.
Kozlovskis emphasizes that the work to strengthen the eastern border does not stop; on the contrary, intensive construction work on the border between Latvia and Russia will continue in 2024.
European countries strengthen security on the border with Belarus
Recently, the Civil Aviation Agency of Latvia decided to impose significant restrictions on airspace near the border with Belarus. They will take effect from October 16 and will be in effect until the end of this year.
In August, it was announced that Poland would create a new military unit on the border with Belarus. It will be stationed in the city of Charna-Bilostotsk, 35 kilometers from Belarus.
