Danger of MiG-31K

MiG-31K poses a threat as it carries the aeroballistic missile Kinzhal, which is challenging to intercept due to its trajectory.

As of spring 2023, Ukrainian forces hadn't successfully intercepted Kinzhal. However, in May, Ukrainian air defense forces for the first time destroyed a Russian Kinzhal using the Patriot system provided by partners.

Shelling of Ukraine on January 13

On the morning of January 13, Russian occupiers launched a mass missile attack on Ukraine, including cruise missiles from Tu-95MS aircraft and aeroballistic Kinzhal from MiG-31K fighters.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported 40 airborne attacks, with 8 missiles successfully intercepted by air defense forces. Explosions were reported in many regions, and air defense systems were active. Impact sites were recorded in Dnipro, Poltava, and Sumy regions, with rocket debris falling in Chernihiv.
