The Kremlin seeks a short-term ceasefire primarily to secure the military parade in Moscow from potential Ukrainian strikes, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with Bloomberg.
Russia’s intentions
Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the Russian leadership wants to use a one- or several-day ceasefire exclusively to protect its annual military parade. After that, attacks are likely to resume.
“They want the parade to pass calmly for a few hours, and then resume attacks afterward,” Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized that Ukraine will not allow this ceasefire to become a tactical deception.
Ukraine’s response
Zelenskyy noted that he supports ceasefire initiatives that genuinely help protect civilians and facilitate prisoner exchanges.
“We always respond positively to genuine ceasefire proposals with Russia, if they exist,” Zelenskyy added.
Ceasefire for the parade
The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) stressed that Russian president Vladimir Putin is proposing a ceasefire because he cannot guarantee security even in Moscow. Experts note that this initiative has nothing to do with intentions to achieve peace.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin made a new statement about a ceasefire on May 9, noting that Putin will decide personally, but no clear dates or conditions have yet been defined.
In response, the Ukrainian authorities decided to check the information background. Ukraine will clarify with Trump’s team the details of Russia’s proposal for a ceasefire on May 9. The country’s leadership has repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine is ready for peace, but not for illusions and tactical manipulations.
