The Kremlin has backed US President Donald Trump’s position on the need for time to assess the impact of new American sanctions, according to a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, during a briefing.

"Well, we’ll really see — God willing — what happens in six months. We see what’s happening now, we see what it was like a year ago, two years ago. And, God willing, we’ll see what it’s like in six months and in a year," he said.

On October 23, the US president said he was pleased to hear that Russian President Vladimir Putin was confident in the resilience of the Russian economy to new US sanctions.

"I am glad he feels that way. I'll let you know about it in six months from now. Let's see how it all works out," Trump said.

US targets Russia’s economy

On the night of October 23, the US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against Russia aimed at pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table with Ukraine.

Analysts at the New York Times note that these measures are unlikely to affect the Russian leader’s military plans but are expected to create additional challenges for Russia’s economy.

More details on the consequences can be found in the RBC-Ukraine report.

Meanwhile, we reported today that the US Senate is preparing to hold a "Russia Week", during which several key bills are scheduled for a vote, including measures on using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine.

Additionally, we also reported that Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries have called Russia’s plans to lower its key interest rate into question.
