In South Korea, people often brush their teeth three times a day, after each meal. This practice is called the “3-3-3” rule.

Why oral hygiene matters

Proper dental care isn’t just about a nice smile. Studies link good oral hygiene to a lower risk of serious health issues, including Alzheimer’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

The “3-3-3” rule

Originating in the 1980s, the rule recommends:

  • Brush three times a day

  • Start brushing 3 minutes after eating

  • Brush for 3 minutes

The practice became so popular that public brushing stations appeared in subways, cafes, and shopping centers, with some schools even providing dedicated oral hygiene stations.

Does extra brushing help?

Some research supports the benefits. A 2017 study found that people who brushed after lunch had a lower risk of gum disease. However, not all dentists consider it essential.

Why dentists advise waiting after meals

Dentist Daniel Naisan explains that brushing immediately after eating, especially acidic foods like citrus, soda, or wine, can damage temporarily softened enamel. Experts recommend waiting 30–60 minutes before brushing.

How long to brush

Two minutes of proper brushing is usually enough. Brushing for three minutes won’t harm, but it doesn’t give significantly better results. Aggressive brushing, particularly with hard bristles, can wear down enamel, making teeth thinner, darker, and more sensitive.
