The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has approved the delivery of a domestic armored personnel carrier Khorunzhyi to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is the result of a modification of the Soviet BTR-60.

The APC's hull is made of high-quality Finnish steel, which allows for enhanced ballistic protection without increasing its weight. In particular, the hull is protected around the perimeter from 7.62 mm steel-core bullets. The frontal armor can withstand shots from a large-caliber machine gun from a distance of 10 meters.

"The design of the hull bottom and special mine-resistant seats protects the troops from the effects of explosive devices equivalent to 6 kg of TNT," the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense adds.

Overall, the APC is significantly more powerful than the Soviet BRT-60, as instead of two 90-horsepower petrol engines in the front of the hull, it is equipped with a 330-horsepower diesel engine that allows the vehicle to reach speeds of more than 80 km/h. In particular, the capacity of the tanks provides a range of more than five hundred kilometers.

"A radically different body layout has improved ergonomics and convenience for landing, which is carried out through the aft part of the armored vehicle,' the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense says.

The upgraded APC is also equipped with modern electronics, video surveillance cameras, air conditioning systems, and an autonomous generator.

The Khorunzhyi is armed with a combat module with a 14.5 mm machine gun or a 30x113 mm cannon. The APC is produced in six versions:

  • armored personnel carrier
  • personnel carrier;
  • sanitary evacuation vehicle;
  • repair and evacuation;
  • command and staff vehicle;
  • self-propelled mortar vehicle.

On Independence Day of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the first successful use of Ukraine's Palianytsia drone missile. The very next day, he demonstrated it.
