Keep close eye on your hands: discovery of initial sign of health risk Find out what the strange spots on your hands mean (collage: RBC-Ukraine)

Some illnesses are known as "silent killers" because they might not be detected or diagnosed immediately. Yet, there exists an indicator that can aid in the early detection of harmful infections, according to Mirror.

What you need to pay attention to

The British Heart Foundation suggests that people check their fingers and hands regularly. Red or purple spots on your palms or fingers can be an alarming indication of a serious infection that, if left untreated, can lead to death in 80% of cases.

If you observe new red or purple splotches on your skin, consult a doctor immediately. These spots could be your first indication of endocarditis, a heart infection.

Thus, it's essential to pay close attention to your skin and overall health. Medical professionals recommend not disregarding any initial indications or warning signs you may observe.

What is endocarditis

Endocarditis is inflammation that affects the endocardium, the tissue lining the heart's inner cavities and valves. To reduce the risk of infection, it is essential to receive prompt and proper treatment. This condition commonly arises due to bacterial or infectious agents entering the bloodstream and settling in the heart valves or endocardium.

Symptoms of endocarditis may comprise fever, weakness, joint pain, heartbeat alterations, and heart murmurs. The infection can cause growths (vegetations) on the heart valves, leading to circulatory disorders and serious complications, such as heart failure or stroke.

Diagnosis of endocarditis requires laboratory blood tests, echocardiography, and other heart examinations. Treatment usually involves administering antibiotics to fight the infection, and in some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove affected valves.
