Russia shows that it does not want to end the war against Ukraine in the near future. But the USA has the possibility to bring Moscow to negotiations, according to the chief diplomat of the EU, Kaja Kallas.

"President Trump’s resolve to get a peace deal is vital. The EU and our European partners worked to coordinate with President Trump ahead of Alaska meeting. But the harsh reality is that Russia has no intention of ending this war anytime soon," she noted.

Kallas also emphasized that even during the meetings of the delegations Russia began new attacks on Ukraine, and Putin continues to drag out negotiations and hopes that this will get away with him.

"The US holds the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously. The EU will work with Ukraine and the US so that Russia’s aggression does not succeed and that any peace is sustainable," the head of EU diplomacy stressed.

She also declared that the EU will continue to support Ukraine, in particular by working on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

Trump and Putin meeting in Alaska

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held negotiations in Alaska. The meeting, held in a "three on three" format, lasted approximately three hours and concluded with a brief joint press conference.

Later, Trump declared that he advocates concluding a peace agreement instead of an agreement on ceasefire.

On Monday, August 18, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will go to Washington to discuss with the American leader the details of the possible ending of the war.

The leaders of Europe made a statement after the meeting of Trump and Putin and called for a trilateral summit.
