Europe should not be solely responsible for ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz, as security support must be mutual, stated EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in an interview with CNN.

EU position on regional security

During a conversation with journalist Becky Anderson, the EU’s top diplomat defended Europe’s efforts to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

She responded to criticism from the United States and Gulf countries regarding the lack of involvement by European nations on this issue.

Kallas emphasized that international security cooperation must be a two-way effort. In particular, she pointed to the insufficient involvement of Gulf countries in addressing challenges caused by Russian aggression.

"We have Russia’s war against Ukraine going on for four years. We haven’t seen the Gulf countries helping us there. It can't be only a one-way street," she said.

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz

Recently, the issue of security in the Strait of Hormuz has become a source of tension between the United States and Europe. Media outlets previously reported that US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to European allies, demanding that they take on the primary burden of ensuring security in the region.

Later, Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed the technical details of a possible reopening of this strategic route.

At the same time, the British Prime Minister sharply criticized the political games of US and Russian leaders, stating that he was "fed up" with their impact on the stability of global energy prices.
