Kallas on aid to Ukraine: EU ready to take leadership if US does not want to
The European Union is ready to take the lead in supporting Ukraine. However, Europe hopes that elected US President Donald Trump will not stop supporting Ukrainians, states Top European Union diplomat, Kaja Kallas, according to Politico.
"I’m really sure that all the other members, and hopefully also the United States, are ready to continue with the support to Ukraine... The European Union is also ready to take over this leadership if the United States is not willing to," noted Kallas.
She added that Europe should not "speculate" about future support for Ukraine from the US. According to the EU's top diplomat, "It is not in the interest of America that Russia will be the strongest force in the world."
US aid to Ukraine
The administration of US President Joe Biden has been providing military and financial assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
However, on January 20, Donald Trump will officially become the new US president, and it remains unclear whether he will continue military assistance to Ukraine.
Recently, media outlets citing high-ranking sources reported that after the last military aid package to Ukraine from the Biden administration, several billion dollars allocated by Congress for supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces would still remain. The Trump administration would also have the opportunity to send weapons to Ukraine.
At the same time, the Financial Times reported that Trump is likely to continue providing military aid to Ukrainian soldiers.
