Japan eyes Ukrainian drones, explores purchase deal

Japan is considering purchasing Ukrainian-made strike drones for its Self-Defense Forces, citing the weapons' successful use in real combat against Russian aggression, according to Kyodo News and 47news.
The Japanese government is studying the potential integration of Ukrainian UAVs into its defense arsenal. Ukraine has significantly advanced drone technology, focusing on combat-tested designs.
Tokyo's final decision will follow a comparison of Ukrainian drones with alternatives from other countries, including Israel. However, due to the political situation surrounding Gaza, Japanese authorities are leaning toward supporting Ukrainian-made systems.
Ukrainian drones' strengths
Japanese Defense Ministry officials note that Ukrainian drones are highly resistant to electronic warfare facilities and have long operational ranges.
"Ukraine has repeatedly upgraded (their expertise in drones – ed.) over a short period of time based on real battlefield experience, making them highly capable," the ministry said. In addition to direct procurement, Japan hopes to acquire technology for future domestic drone production.
Middle East wants Ukrainian UAVs
Western media reports that at least one other Gulf country—later identified as Qatar—is negotiating the purchase of Ukrainian interceptor drones to cost-effectively shoot down Iranian Shahed drones.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Saudi Arabia plans a large-scale purchase of Ukrainian interceptor drones, with the contract potentially worth millions of dollars.
Separately, the Saudi oil giant Saudi Aramco is reportedly in talks with two Ukrainian companies to acquire interceptor drones to protect oil fields from attacks by Iranian Shahed drones.
