'We must be champions of peace': Italy pushes for global truce during 2026 Winter Olympics

Italy will seek to achieve a global truce during the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held from February 6 to 22 next year, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, according to Ansa.
"We must be champions of peace," said Tajani on the sidelines of the 12th Italy–Latin America Conference in Rome.
He also emphasized that Italy supports the US plan regarding Gaza and that hope for peace should never be lost.
"Rome and Italy are increasingly the crossroads of peace, development, and growth. In view of the Milano Cortina Olympics, we are presenting a proposal for an Olympic Truce for all wars, including Ukraine and the Middle East, to the United Nations," added the Italian Foreign Minister.
About the Olympic Games in Milan
The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. These will be the fourth Olympic Games hosted by Italy and the first in Milan.
In addition, they will be the first Olympic Games hosted by two cities, as well as the first Winter Olympic Games since the 1984 Sarajevo Games, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place in different locations.
For the first time, ski mountaineering competitions will be included in the Winter Olympics. Interestingly, for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted an increase in the distance between venues, allowing alpine skiing competitions to be held in mountainous areas, while indoor sports such as hockey and figure skating could take place in a large city more than 160 kilometers away.
