On Monday, December 29, the Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, decided to provide Ukraine with a new package of military aid, according to Ansa.

The decision to continue aid was approved despite opposition from the right-wing party Lega, which opposes further military support for Kyiv.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that Italy will support Ukraine "for as long as it takes."

Italy’s support for Ukraine

In 2025, Italy experienced significant internal disagreements, both between the government and the opposition and within the ruling coalition.

A year ago, Meloni actively advocated strengthening Kyiv’s defense capabilities, signed agreements on the delivery of air defense systems, and repeatedly called on partners to increase support.

However, in 2024–2025, the coalition began showing early signs of a split, particularly between Meloni’s party and the more skeptical Lega, along with some politicians from Forza Italia.

This explains the growing tension within Giorgia Meloni’s coalition government over the question of continuing support for Ukraine in 2026.

Notably, during a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome, Meloni hinted at "painful concessions" for Ukraine and supported the start of negotiations with the US.

Additionally, Meloni announced Italy’s support for using frozen Russian assets to create a reparations fund for Ukraine, while emphasizing that this must be done "on a solid legal basis."

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced the formation of the 12th package of military support for Ukraine.
