Israel unveils Iron Beam combat laser, key facts revealed

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has completed the development of a new high-powered laser weapon capable of intercepting drones, according to Bloomberg.
The combat laser, named Iron Beam, has a power of 100 kilowatts.
During testing, it demonstrated its ability to effectively target drones. However, the exact performance metrics of the new system have not been disclosed.
The new laser is being positioned as a cost-effective alternative to traditional missile systems: a single interception costs less than $5, whereas launching a standard missile can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
However, the system has certain limitations, such as reduced effectiveness in cloudy weather.
In the coming months, the Iron Beam is expected to become part of a multi-layered air defense system, complementing the Iron Dome. Full integration into the national air defense network is planned by the end of 2025.
The announcement of the Iron Beam came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that, due to increasing isolation, Israel must strive for security independence.
Which countries have laser weapons
It was recently reported that France is developing a new-generation laser weapon. The new system is called the Next-Generation Laser Defense System (Syderal). It is intended for countering drones and short-range air defense, capable of striking tactical drones, rocket and mortar shells, as well as guided munitions, both during the day and at night.
In the UK, the first successful tests of a high-energy laser weapon mounted on armored vehicles were conducted. It can destroy drones using a powerful infrared laser.
In April, Ukraine showcased its latest laser weapon, the Tryzub, for the first time. More details about it can be found in the article by RBC-Ukraine.
