Israel deploys troops in buffer zone on Syria border
Israel deployed its troops to the buffer zone and several other areas on the border with Syria. This came after Syrian rebels entered Damascus, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Israeli army explained these actions as a measure to "ensure the safety of Israelis and communities on the Golan Heights."
"We emphasize that the IDF is not interfering with the internal events in Syria. The IDF will continue to operate as long as necessary in order to preserve the buffer zone and defend Israel and its civilians," the statement said.
It is worth noting that today, December 8, media outlets reported that Israeli tanks crossed into Syrian territory after the regime of Bashar Assad officially collapsed and rebels entered Damascus.
Fall of Assad’s regime
About a week and a half ago, a new wave of civil war erupted in Syria. Syrian rebels captured several key cities, while Assad's regime forces did not put up much resistance.
Assad's main ally, Russia, also failed to provide the expected support, despite media claims.
On Sunday, December 8, it was officially confirmed that groups of Syrian rebels had entered Damascus, marking the downfall of Bashar Assad’s regime.
According to Western media reports, Assad left Damascus on a Russian plane. There are speculations that he may have died in a plane crash.
