Israel is considering a large-scale ground operation in Gaza, which could include a military occupation lasting several months, reports The Washington Post.

After a two-month ceasefire with Hamas, Israeli forces are preparing for the next phase of military operations in the Gaza Strip. Political and military leaders in Israel are actively discussing plans for a new ground campaign. This could involve a military occupation of Gaza for several months or even longer.

The move could be part of a more aggressive strategy. It may include tighter control over humanitarian aid, targeting Hamas's civilian leadership, and evacuating civilians to designated "humanitarian bubbles."

For now, Israeli officials say they are awaiting the outcome of ceasefire negotiations. However, no final decision has been made on whether to escalate military operations further.

An invasion and occupation of Gaza would require significant resources. Up to five army divisions may be needed to carry it out.

However, according to The Washington Post, some senior officials believe that only a full-scale military operation can achieve Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s primary objective — eliminating Hamas. The group’s attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis.

Experts note that the previous Israel Defense Forces (IDF) campaign was limited due to disputes between political and military leaders. Concerns from the international community about civilian casualties also played a role.

A shift in political leadership in the US and Israel's strengthened defense capabilities could influence strategy. This may lead to more decisive action.

Israeli officials also do not rule out continuing negotiations with Hamas through intermediaries before launching a large-scale offensive.

Ceasefire violation

Recently, intense fighting resumed between Israel and Hamas. The reason is that militants refuse to release hostages to Israel.

Against this backdrop, Israeli forces have carried out multiple strikes on militant targets in the Gaza Strip.
