US President Donald Trump said he could visit Ukraine if this were necessary to achieve peace, according to Trump’s remarks at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following talks at Mar-a-Lago.
In particular, journalists asked him whether he would be prepared to travel to Ukraine to help achieve peace.
"I would like to get the deal done, and I don't necessarily have to go. If that would help save 25,000 lives a month or whatever it may be, I'd certainly be willing to do that," the US President stated.
Donald Trump has never visited Ukraine, neither during his first presidency in 2017–2021 nor during his current term.
By contrast, his predecessor, Joe Biden, made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on February 20, 2023, amid Russia’s full-scale war. Before that, Biden visited Ukraine six times while serving as vice president between 2009 and 2017.
Trump–Zelenskyy meeting
On December 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he planned to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss a peace plan, noting that key decisions could be made before the New Year.
Earlier, Zelenskyy presented a 20-point peace plan coordinated with the United States, along with a package of documents on security guarantees and Ukraine’s post-war recovery.
Ahead of the planned meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump held a phone call lasting more than an hour with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which the sides agreed to continue contacts following the talks between the US and Ukrainian leaders.
In addition, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine held consultations with European leaders.
The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy has already taken place. Further details are available in RBC-Ukraine’s report.
