The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and Vice President Mohammad Eslami has arrived in Moscow, where he plans to sign an agreement on the construction of nuclear power plants, Reuters reports.

Eslami told Iranian media that during the visit, bilateral agreements are expected to be signed, including the construction of eight nuclear power plants, as Tehran aims to achieve 20 GW of nuclear energy by 2040.

"Contract negotiations have taken place, and with the signing of the agreement this week, we will enter the operational steps," he said.

According to Reuters, Iran, which experiences electricity shortages during periods of high demand, currently has only one operating nuclear power plant in the southern city of Bushehr, with a capacity of about 1 GW. This plant was built by Russia.

The visit comes amid the UN considering the possibility of renewed sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

Bushehr plant was not attacked during Israel-Iran war

In June, when Israel began missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that agreements had been reached with Tel Aviv to avoid targeting the Bushehr nuclear plant.

Putin added that Russian specialists were present at the site, and he wanted to ensure their safety.
