Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Türkiye on January 30. He aims to try to prevent potential US strikes against Iran, according to Anadolu Agency and The Guardian.
Sources said Araghchi will meet in Türkiye with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Fidan is expected to publicly announce that Türkiye is ready to make a meaningful contribution to de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran.
The Guardian reports that Ankara will try to influence Tehran to make concessions on its nuclear program, which in theory could prevent US strikes. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also proposed a video conference between the parties, believing that direct talks between US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian could prevent conflict.
However, the British newspaper notes that Erdoğan’s proposal was deemed unacceptable to "circumspect Iranian diplomats." There have been no official direct talks between the US and Iran since the signing of the nuclear deal over a decade ago.
Currently, according to media reports, US President Donald Trump is considering a large-scale strike against Iran, as negotiations on limiting Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile production have reached a deadlock. Potential targets could include Iran’s top leadership and nuclear facilities.
Trump recently stated that Iran is seeking a new deal and threatened Tehran with major attacks if it does not agree. Iran, however, denied any desire for a deal and said its military is prepared to respond immediately and decisively to any aggression on land, in the air, or at sea.
