Amid a sharp escalation in the situation in the Middle East, Iran has closed its airspace to aviation coming from Iraq. At the same time, the United Kingdom decided on Wednesday to evacuate its diplomatic staff from Tehran, according to Clash Report and Politico.
Iran has imposed restrictions on the use of its airspace for flights arriving from Iraq. The decision was taken amid rising risks to civilian aviation and reports of a possible military escalation in the region.
The airspace closure is being viewed as a preventive security measure and could affect international airline routes that use this corridor for transit flights.
UK diplomatic mission evacuation
Alongside the aviation restrictions, the United Kingdom has evacuated its ambassador and all embassy staff from Tehran. According to a British official, the move followed a security assessment and was aimed at protecting personnel.
The UK diplomatic mission in Tehran has been temporarily closed and will continue operations remotely.
Reasons for heightened security measures
The escalation is linked to actions by the United States, which earlier ordered the evacuation of personnel from its largest military base in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering options for military pressure on the Iranian regime, increasing tensions and prompting a series of preventive decisions by Washington’s allies.
Guidance for citizens
UK authorities have updated travel advice, citing changes to consular services and heightened risks. Similar steps could be taken by other countries if the situation continues to deteriorate.
US officials have warned that a strike on Iran could occur within the next 24 hours. Tehran has said it is prepared to respond, while European sources point to a high likelihood of military action that could further destabilize the Middle East.
Separately, the organization United Against Nuclear Iran has reportedly provided the White House with a list of 50 key Iranian military sites amid reports of a possible US strike, underscoring the growing tension in the region.
