iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus to get 'Always-On' feature: What rumors say
Future iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus smartphones will most likely have Always-On and ProMotion displays, writes AppleInsider.
What is known of iPhone 17
A new report says that in 2025, Apple will introduce the previously Pro-only version of Always-On and a 120Hz ProMotion screen refresh to base iPhone models.
After introducing ProMotion 120Hz to the iPad Pro in 2017, Apple introduced it to the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021, giving it a faster and smoother scrolling experience. Since then, the feature has remained only in the more expensive iPhone Pro models, but industry sources say that will change in 2025.
According to sources, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will get OLED displays using low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) panels. These panels allow the screen to refresh up to 120Hz when needed, creating what Apple calls ProMotion.
If necessary, the same panels can be slowed down to 1 Hz. That's how Apple's Always-On displays work.
However, whether Apple will do this for the 2025 iPhone lineup depends on display manufacturer BOE. While the company has supplied LTPO screens to manufacturers such as Huawei, it only sent a sample to Apple.
That prototype was shipped in late 2023, which the source said means it won't be possible to ramp up production in time for the iPhone 16 lineup.
Obviously, there are doubts about the BOE's ability to meet Apple's demands. The article says that the 'Cupertino people' can even help the BOE in the so-called additional training.
In addition, BOE is reportedly having trouble supplying OLED screens for the upcoming iPhone SE 4. The company has had a strained relationship with Apple, including an incident where the organization was allegedly exposed for unauthorized design changes to iPhone 13 displays.
Earlier we wrote that the iPhone 16 smartphones will be released in completely new colors.
Also, Apple had recently made a statement about a folded model of the iPhone.
