Indian tariffs mark first phase of US pressure on Russian oil – Bloomberg

The US plans new measures to pressure Russian oil following an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, Bloomberg reports.
According to the outlet’s sources, the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering new sanctions targeting Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers and the organizations involved in servicing it.
At the same time, a White House official told Bloomberg that despite a positive assessment of the meeting between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US still intends to announce secondary sanctions as early as Friday.
Additionally, sources say the Trump administration is exploring various options to reduce the Kremlin’s energy revenues. Potential measures include sanctions on oil companies and stricter enforcement of existing restrictions.
Tariffs against India
On August 6, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. The move came in response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.
These new tariffs come on top of the 25% duties on Indian products that took effect in the US on August 1.
India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already responded to the new measures, attempting to justify the country’s need to buy Russian oil.
