India responded to the additional 25% US tariffs with justifications for why it is allegedly forced to buy Russian oil, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that it has "already clearly outlined its position" regarding the purchase of oil from Russia.

"Our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India," the ministry said.

It also described Trump’s decision to impose additional tariffs as " unfortunate." India pointed out that "several other countries" also purchase Russian oil "in line with their national interests."

"We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests," the ministry added.

Trump’s additional tariffs

US President Donald Trump today, August 6, signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India.

The order justifies this step by stating that India is purchasing oil from Russia, which poses a threat to US national security.

At the same time, the US had already implemented a 25% tariff on India starting August 1.
