India has begun talks with Russia to purchase five additional S-400 air defense systems, following an initial deal for five units signed in October 2018, according to Hindustan Times.

According to the publication, a meeting of representatives from the defense ministries of the two countries is scheduled to take place this week to discuss the joint production or direct procurement of S-400 air defense systems, aimed at strengthening India's defense capabilities.

It is reported that India requires five such systems to protect against potential attacks along the entire coastline of the country and to close gaps in the air defense system in the Northern Command area.

The parties have already reached a preliminary agreement on the cost of the additional systems.

It is expected that three of the five systems will be procured directly, while the other two may be produced in India by private companies under a technology transfer agreement.

The deal is expected to be finalized before Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India in December.

Earlier, Russia and India signed a contract in October 2018 for the supply of S-400 systems worth $5.43 billion for five units.

S-400 Triumf

This is a Russian long- and medium-range surface-to-air missile system designed to engage aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

The system can simultaneously engage dozens of targets and uses different types of missiles to strike at distances of up to 400 km and at altitudes of up to 30 km.

It is equipped with mobile launchers and a detection radar, which allows it to rapidly change positions and integrate into the nationwide air defense system.

India–Russia relations

India continues to maintain close economic and strategic ties with Russia despite concerns from its Western partners.

According to Reuters, in December 2024, an Indian company sent $1.4 million worth of the explosive HMX to Russia, which is used in missile production, and the United States has already warned of possible sanctions if such supplies continue.

Additionally, India purchases Russian oil, which raises concerns among Western allies.

Meanwhile, a survey showed that Ukrainians classify India as a hostile state, along with China, North Korea, and Iran.
