Syrian President Bashar al-Assad continues to lose control over the country's settlements. Syrian Kurds have captured the city of Deir ez-Zor, according to Reuters.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the United States, now control the key city in eastern Syria as well as the main border crossing with Iraq.

According to two Reuters sources, the Syrian Kurds took full control of Deir ez-Zor city by noon. This is the third city Assad has lost in a week.

Omar Abu Leila, an activist from the media platform Deir Ezzor 24, told reporters that Syrian forces and Iran-backed Iraqi militants had abandoned Deir ez-Zor before the SDF arrived.

Reuters sources also clarified that shortly after, the Syrian Democratic Forces captured the nearby border point of Abu Kamal.

It is worth noting that the Syrian Democratic Forces do not engage with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels, who are also fighting Assad’s forces.
