In response to Hungary's actions: Ukraine expels two Hungarian diplomats

Ukraine expels two Hungarian diplomats in response to Hungary's actions. They must leave the country within 48 hours, according to a statement from Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Twitter (X).
"Two Hungarian diplomats must leave our country within 48 hours. We have just summoned Hungarian Ambassador to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and presented him with the relevant note," Sybiha said.
He noted that Ukraine is acting in response to Hungary's actions, "based on the principle of reciprocity and our national interests."
Spy scandal
Today, May 9, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) reported the exposure of agents from the Hungarian military intelligence who were operating in the Zakarpattia region. Their main tasks included:
-
gathering information about the state of military security in the region,
-
identifying weaknesses in ground and air defense,
-
studying the attitudes and reactions of the local population in the event of a possible invasion from Hungary.
As part of the special operation, the SSU detained two agents who were working under the supervision of a Hungarian intelligence officer. Both detainees have been notified of suspicion of treason committed during a state of martial law. According to Ukrainian law, they face life imprisonment.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó commented on the spy incident. In particular, he stated that the information about the exposure of Hungarian military intelligence agents in Zakarpattia should be viewed as "Ukrainian propaganda."
Later, it became known that Hungary had expelled two Ukrainian diplomats.
Hungary claims that anti-Hungarian propaganda in Ukraine has been growing since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The reason for the current "defamation campaign against Hungarians" is the same as previous ones: the government refuses to supply weapons to Ukraine and advocates for peace.
