'Immediate action' required: Borrell urges EU states to help Ukraine with ammuniton
The countries of the European Union should urgently transfer ammunition to Ukraine. Due to their lack, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are experiencing difficulties at the front, stated in his letter to the ministers of foreign affairs and defense of the bloc countries the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, reports Politico.
"Ukrainian soldiers are hampered in their fight against the aggressor – because they lack ammunition," Borrell said.
He called on the EU countries to support Ukraine in any possible way, including by searching for shells in their warehouses, by independent and joint purchases from European industry, by purchasing ammunition that is already available on the market, or by financing Ukrainian industry.
"Together, I believe we can make a difference – for Ukraine and for the security of Europe – but this require [sic] immediate action. Time is of the essence," the diplomat added.
Borrell also called on the EU countries to disclose information about what they are doing at the bilateral level in the matter of supplying arms to Ukrainian defenders.
Shortage of shells
The Ukrainian defenders are experiencing a shortage of artillery shells, which directly affects the situation at the front.
In particular, recently Ukrainian defenders had to retreat from Avdiivka against the background of a very difficult situation around the city.
After that, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said that Ukraine would not have lost Avdiyivka if the allies had delivered artillery shells on time.
Previously, the military expert and former speaker of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vladyslav Seleznov told in a comment on RBC-Ukraine how Ukraine can solve the problem of the lack of shells.
