Hungary will not provide Ukraine with weapons, says MFA
Hungary has not provided and is not going to provide Ukraine with weapons, says the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, at a joint press conference with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, and the head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak.
According to him, the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine was not discussed at today's meeting. However, he noted that Hungary has neither provided nor will provide Ukraine with weapons.
"I must tell you that in the future, we will not be supplying weapons, just as we haven't done so before. At the same time, we have never refused assistance to any Ukrainian citizen who has faced hardship," he said.
Szijjártó stated that Hungary is ready to assist Ukraine in the humanitarian sphere and hopes that this will not last long.
Relations between Ukraine and Hungary
It is worth mentioning that the relations between the countries escalated in 2017 when the Verkhovna Rada adopted an education law, stipulating that the language of instruction in educational institutions is the state language. However, according to the educational program, one or more disciplines may be taught in two or more languages. This has repeatedly caused resentment from Hungary, which was accusing Ukraine of alleged problems concerning "national minorities in Zakarpattia."
It's important to note that the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, openly holds a pro-Russian position. He frequently makes statements discrediting Ukraine. In October, he met with Putin in Beijing.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Hungary has not provided military assistance to Ukraine and has also blocked European Union sanctions against Russia. Furthermore, Budapest continues to engage in trade with Russia, and representatives of the Hungarian government visit Moscow.
