Putin makes cynical claim about meeting with Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. He claimed the summit "brings us closer to the necessary decisions" on Ukraine, reports Russian state media.
The Kremlin leader called the summit "timely and very useful," especially for discussing the "Ukrainian crisis," as Russia refers to its war against Ukraine.
"First of all, of course, we talked about a possible resolution of the Ukrainian crisis on a fair basis. And of course, we had the opportunity, which we took, to discuss the genesis and causes of this 'crisis.' Eliminating these causes should form the basis of any settlement," Putin said.
He also complained that the US and Russia had not held talks at this level for a long time. He confirmed that Russia used the opportunity to present its position to Washington.
Putin added that the Kremlin respects the US administration's stance, which "sees the need for the swiftest possible cessation of hostilities."
"Well, we would also like this, and we would like to move toward resolving all issues by peaceful means. The conversation was very frank and substantive, and in my view, it brings us closer to the necessary decisions," he said.
Putin "lays it on thick"
Media reports indicate that Putin made a request to the US regarding Ukraine. He reportedly wants Washington to recognize the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories as part of Russia. He also allegedly proposed freezing the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions in exchange for a halt to fighting and a Ukrainian Armed Forces withdrawal from Donbas.
Trump may be trying to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept the deal Putin proposed. Reports suggest Putin, in response, has offered a ceasefire, a frozen front line, and a written pledge not to attack Ukraine or any European country. However, Russia has a history of breaking its promises, so its assurances carry little weight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he will travel to Washington on Monday, August 18, to discuss details of ending the war with Trump.
