Hungary upset with Rutte, won't back his NATO Secretary General bid
Hungary promises not to support the appointment of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as NATO Secretary General due to his call to bring Budapest to its knees, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"I can tell you two things about Hungary's position. We, of course, will not support Mark Rutte's candidacy. We will not support him! How can we support a man who previously said that Hungary must be brought to its knees," stated the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Hungary.
According to Szijjarto, mutual trust is crucial in NATO, so Budapest will not support someone "who wants to bring us to our knees."
Who else could lead NATO
Recently, Politico reported that US President Joe Biden supports the appointment of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as NATO Secretary General after Jens Stoltenberg's term ends.
Additionally, Sky News reported that Britain also supports Rutte's candidacy. It's worth noting that Stoltenberg's term expires on October 1, 2024.
On March 12, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis officially announced his intention to run for the position of NATO Secretary General.
