Hungary claims to have exposed Ukrainian spy ring, names István as one of the suspects

Hungarian national security services have allegedly identified "two more Ukrainian spies." They "built ties with opposition figures" and promoted Ukraine's position, according to Zoltán Kovács, Hungary's State Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Relations with the Media.
According to Kovács, the first spy is Roland Tseber, who is allegedly an undercover operative of Ukrainian intelligence tasked with establishing ties with opposition figures in Hungary.
The second spy, according to Hungary's version, is István Holló, who is said to be under criminal investigation for espionage.
Hungarian national security services believe that Tseber organized meetings with political and military figures in an attempt to shift Hungary's stance on Russia's war against Ukraine. He was banned from entering Hungary back in 2024.
"Mr. Holló, a pure Ukrainian national, sought military and energy intel linked to Ukraine's war demands," Kovács added.
The alleged espionage activities were reportedly aimed at discrediting Hungary on the international stage and pressuring the government to change its policy toward Ukraine.
Hungarian spy scandal
On May 9 it was reported that Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) had, for the first time, detained agents of Hungarian military intelligence in the Zakarpattia region.
The first agent is a 40-year-old former military officer from the Berehivskyi district, and the second is a former member of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine who retired from the unit in 2025.
They were allegedly tasked with providing Hungary with information about the presence of Ukrainian military equipment in Zakarpattia, as well as reporting on local public sentiment.
