Hungary threatens with World War III if Ukraine joins NATO
Hungary believes that Ukraine's accession to NATO could potentially lead to the start of World War III. As a result, Budapest opposes such an expansion of the Alliance, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
The controversial Hungarian official argues that Ukraine's NATO membership would trigger a global conflict due to the article on collective defense.
"I think anyone who considers this matter with common sense would not want to create such a risk. Therefore, Hungary's position is clear: Ukraine's accession to NATO is impossible," Szijjártó said.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister claims that most EU foreign ministers hold the same position behind closed doors during negotiations.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
Ukraine's path to NATO membership faces numerous challenges, especially as the war with Russia continues.
For instance, NATO member states refrained from extending an invitation to Ukraine during the Washington summit in July. The final communiqué was limited to a statement saying that Ukraine's membership is "inevitable."
Moreover, White House National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby emphasized in June that Ukraine must win the war with Russia to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
