Hungary’s Orban points to the key figure for ending war in Ukraine

To achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia, an external mediator is needed, and the only player capable of this is US President Donald Trump, states Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
According to him, peace between Russia and Ukraine is impossible without the involvement of a third party that is not connected to either side of the conflict. Only such a mediator can have a positive influence on the negotiations, Orbán believes.
“We hope that someone external, who is not linked to either the Russians or the Ukrainians, will apply pressure to reach an agreement and peace. I have personally conducted negotiations with both Russians and Ukrainians, and from my own experience, I see that the two sides negotiating alone will not achieve peace,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
He argues that a third player is needed, one capable of taking a positive step toward peace.
“Unfortunately, the Europeans have stepped out of the process, so only Trump remains, who is quite committed to the idea of peace,” the Hungarian prime minister noted.
Orbán criticizes the EU’s stance on the war in Ukraine
According to the Hungarian leader, Trump is a very rare leader whom Budapest supports, so the chances of achieving results are fairly good. However, regarding the EU, the bloc has proven unable to prevent the war in Ukraine, Orbán asserts.
“Europe has proven incapable of preventing the war in Ukraine. If Trump had been involved, perhaps it wouldn’t have happened. Without a channel for negotiations with Russia, stopping the war is impossible. What Brussels is doing is a demonstration of its ineffectiveness because it refuses to negotiate,” the politician emphasized.
Russia–US talks on the war in Ukraine
Recently, the world discussed a possible meeting between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at reaching a peace agreement on the war in Ukraine.
The summit was planned to take place in Budapest, but preparations have stalled.
The reasons are that both sides want clarity and tangible results from the meeting, while each continues to insist on its own conditions.
For example, Trump stated a few days ago that he is willing to meet with Putin only if an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is in place.
On October 28, the Kremlin announced that Russia is demanding guarantees from the West to ensure the leaders’ meeting produces concrete results. This position was voiced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Meanwhile, Washington is trying to move the talks forward by applying pressure on the Kremlin. Recently, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said that Trump will impose new, tough sanctions on Russia to push Putin toward negotiations.
