Hungary claims Trump-Putin talks may be in works

Hungary’s foreign minister Péter Szijjártó has dismissed as fake the reports about a possible postponement of the summit between US president Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Budapest, according to Szijjártó’s post on his account on X.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that since the announcement of the peace summit in Budapest, it has been clear that many would do everything possible to prevent it from taking place.
According to the minister, the pro-war political elite and its media always behave this way ahead of events that could prove decisive in choosing between war and peace.
Szijjártó added that similar disinformation appears in the media almost before every European Council meeting or before decisions on sanctions or the European Peace Facility are made.
"It will be no different this time. Until the Summit actually takes place, expect a wave of leaks, fake news, and statements claiming that it won’t happen," the Hungarian foreign minister wrote.
Trump-Putin summit in Budapest
On October 16, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following the conversation, the White House leader proposed holding another summit in Budapest focused on a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
The meeting was initially expected within the next two weeks.
However, on October 20, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone call, the content of which remains unknown.
Afterward, Lavrov rejected Trump’s proposal to halt hostilities along the current front line.
On October 21, several Western media outlets, citing sources in the White House, reported that preparations for the summit had been suspended.
According to Axios, the Trump-Putin meeting will not take place in the near future as it is deemed "unnecessary."
