An agreement between Hungary and the European Union regarding additional funding for assistance to Ukraine amounting to 50 billion euros is still far from being reached, says the Hungarian prime minister’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás.

According to the government representative, Hungary is in negotiations with the European Commission on financial support for Ukraine, but their positions differ significantly, and there is no certainty that an agreement will be reached.

He also noted that if this does not succeed, the other 26 EU members may reach a decision without Hungary.

At the summit of EU leaders on December 14-15, Hungary blocked the decision to allocate 50 billion euros to Ukraine for the years 2024-2027.

The issue of aid to Kyiv will be reconsidered at the EU summit on February 1. However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán threatens to block it. He demands concessions from the EU in exchange for approving the package.

Against this backdrop, a petition was initiated in the European Parliament to strip Hungary of its voting rights in the EU Council. Within four days, it was announced that the required number of signatures had been collected. The European Parliament will consider the suspension of Hungary's voting rights on January 18.
