Hungary’s Foreign Ministry again threatens Ukraine with halting energy supplies, but claims it is holding back out of pity for Ukrainian children, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

"Several types of energy carriers are supplied from Hungary to Ukraine. Among them, electricity stands out in particular, accounting for 30–40% of Ukraine’s monthly imports. Let us think about what would happen if 30–40% of electricity imports into the country were stopped, what consequences would that have?" Szijjártó said.

According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, energy supplies to Ukraine affect not the government, prime minister, or ministers, but rather ordinary people, families, and children living in the country.

"We do not want a Ukrainian apartment where small children live to be left without heating, because these little children cannot be held responsible for the behavior of a former actor who is now their president," Szijjártó added.

What preceded it

On August 13 and 18, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out drone strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline. One of the attacks caused a fire at the facility, forcing Russia to completely stop pumping oil through the pipeline.

On August 21, Ukrainian drones launched a third attack, this time on the Unecha station, which is also part of the Druzhba pipeline. As a result, oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia was suspended.

Following this, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó claimed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used Ukraine’s Independence Day as an occasion to threaten Hungary.
