Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar condemned a campaign video by Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party that used artificial intelligence to depict a soldier’s execution, according to Reuters.
AI manipulation in election campaigning
The Fidesz video alternates footage of a crying child with an AI-generated scene of a soldier being shot. The video also warns that "Brussels is preparing to make it a reality."
TISZA party leader Peter Magyar sharply criticized the video, calling it "soulless manipulation" and "sickening, unforgivable and deeply outrageous."
The Orbán government does not deny using AI. Prime Minister’s chief of staff Gergely Gulyás defended the video, saying it reflects the reality of war.
Political context
Ahead of the 2026 elections, Fidesz is pushing a narrative that the opposition would drag Hungary into war under EU influence.
Meanwhile, polls indicate that Peter Magyar’s party is currently leading Orbán’s Fidesz by 8–12 points.
Orbán's new move
Recently, Viktor Orbán has intensified his anti-European and anti-Ukraine rhetoric. He has warned Europe of the last year of peace, claiming that EU policies are allegedly leading to a direct confrontation with Russia.
Orbán has also complained about pressure from Brussels, stating that Hungary must "defeat them too," referring to European bureaucrats he claims are interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
In addition, the Hungarian government is trying to block public support for Kyiv. Orbán recently launched a petition against aid to Ukraine.
Analysts suggest that in Orbán's struggle to maintain power, Russia could help him, as he remains a valuable figure for the Kremlin within the EU.
