Reaction from Germany

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to commend Biden for his significant achievements for the US, Europe, and the world. He highlighted that Biden has fostered strong transatlantic cooperation, bolstered NATO, and made the US a good and reliable partner for Germany.

“His decision not to run again deserves respect,” Scholz emphasized.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed admiration and recognition for the President's decision. He noted that under Biden's leadership and resolve, the US has navigated the economic crisis following the pandemic and recovered from the Capitol attacks. Additionally, Biden's administration provided exemplary support to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

"A great gesture from a great president who has always fought for democracy and freedom," Sánchez added.

Reaction from Ireland

In response to the US President's announcement, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, on behalf of the people and government, thanked Biden for his global leadership and friendship.

He emphasized that Biden has consistently been a steadfast voice and passionate advocate for peace on the island of Ireland throughout his various roles.

"And our country owes him a great debt for this," the Prime Minister added.

Reaction from Norway

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed respect for President Biden's decision not to seek re-election.

"He justifies the decision by saying that he wants to put the country before himself. That reasoning commands respect," Støre said in a statement to Reuters.

Biden announced his decision not to seek a second term on social media platform X. Alongside his post, he included a letter stating that, in the interest of his party and country, he should step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of his term.

Biden also indicated that he will address the American public later this week with more detailed information about his decision.
