More than half of Russian citizens want the war against Ukraine to end. They can see that Russia is not winning on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during an online address at the Reuters Next summit.

According to Zelenskyy, he discussed the situation on the front line and possible negotiations with Russia during the G7 summit in France. The talks also covered missile strikes, long-range weapons, Russian military losses, and the state of Russia’s economy.

"Good news is, first of all, that Putin has to stop this war. And I have unanimity from all the leaders and the EU Presidents. We have the unanimity that Russia is not winning, losing a lot of people, and they have to make a deal as quickly as possible, and they don't have initiative in their hands," the President said.

The President noted that many people around Putin are pushing him toward a new large-scale mobilization, regardless of the casualties and the number of lives that could be lost. According to Zelenskyy, the Kremlin is not considering those consequences.

"But there is a huge percentage of Russian people who understand that they are not winning this war, and that's why they have to stop this war... More than 60% of Russians want to stop this war. That's why we need more pressure on Putin," Zelenskyy added.

Zelenskyy-Putin meeting

Ukraine has repeatedly proposed holding a leaders' meeting with Russia in an effort to end the war.

However, the Kremlin responded that if President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin, he can come to Moscow.

It recently emerged that a Zelenskyy-Putin meeting had been proposed on the sidelines of the G7 summit. Moscow once again rejected the idea.
