The Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile at the USS Carney destroyer, according to the US Central Command.

"On Jan. 26, at approximately 1:30 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired one anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen toward Arleigh-Burke class destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) in the Gulf of Aden," the statement said.

The military said the missile was successfully shot down by the destroyer USS Carney.

There were no reports of injury or damage.

Houthi attacks

Since November 2023, the Yemeni Houthis began regularly attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Aden and the Red Sea with drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. The first attacks coincided with the start of Israel's war with the Palestinian group Hamas.

In response to numerous attacks on January 12, the United States and Britain hit Houthi military facilities in Yemen with missiles. However, despite the strikes of Western countries, the militants of the group continued to attack merchant ships.

On January 25, the United States called on China to persuade Iran to influence the Houthis to stop the attacks.
