Historic US Open feat: Kostyuk reaches round of 16 in both singles and doubles

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk made a historic achievement for national tennis. At the 2025 US Open, she became the first Ukrainian to reach the round of 16 simultaneously in both singles and doubles.
Road to round of 16 in singles
For 22-year-old Kostyuk, this tournament marked a true breakthrough. For the first time in her career, she reached the fourth round at the US Open.
On her way to this historic result, she defeated three opponents in a row: British player Katie Boulter, then Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez, and in the third round, she confidently overcame French player Diane Parry.
Due to this winning streak, Kostyuk reached the round of 16 at one of the world's most prestigious tournaments. In this round, she will face Czech player Karolina Muchova, ranked 13th in the world.
Success in doubles
At the same time, Kostyuk competed in doubles, partnering with Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse. In the opening match, the duo comfortably defeated the Spanish-Italian pair Jessica Buzas Maneiro and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
A major success came in the round of 32, where Kostyuk and Ruse eliminated the 14th-seeded team, Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and German Laura Siegemund.
In the round of 16, they are set to face one of the world's strongest doubles teams, the fourth-seeded "neutral" Veronika Kudermetova and Belgian Elise Mertens.
National record
Thanks to this result, Kostyuk became the first Ukrainian woman to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament in both singles and doubles simultaneously.
Previously, Ukrainian tennis players had also reached the round of 16 at majors, but in different years. Among them are Kateryna and Alona Bondarenko, Lesia Tsurenko, Dayana Yastremska, and Kostyuk herself.
Specifically, Marta had previously reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros and the Australian Open. But only in New York was she able to combine these two achievements within a single tournament.
Upcoming key matches
Both of Kostyuk's matches, singles and doubles, are scheduled for Monday, September 1.
