In today’s world, where concern for our health is growing, dietary supplements play a key role. However, they don’t always bring benefits, according to Marca.

What’s the risk? Conflicting data on vitamin D and blood pressure

Research into the effects of vitamin D intake on the human body has produced conflicting results.

On the one hand, some studies have found that people with low levels of vitamin D tend to have higher blood pressure. This suggests that the issue may lie not in the supplement itself, but in the deficiency. However, when looking at individuals who regularly take vitamin D supplements, the results are mixed, showing either slight benefits or no noticeable changes at all.

Some findings suggest that vitamin D may help lower blood pressure in people who already suffer from hypertension and have low vitamin D levels. In such specific cases, supplementation may help manage blood pressure, but even then, there is no 100% guarantee it will be effective.

How to take vitamin D correctly: expert advice

While taking vitamin D supplements can be safe and beneficial, it’s important to follow expert recommendations to avoid overdoing it or using it incorrectly.

Experts at the Mayo Clinic generally recommend taking vitamin D. They note that without it, bones can become soft, thin, and brittle, and the risk of osteoporosis increases. Therefore, if you're not getting enough of this vitamin from sunlight or food, a supplement may be necessary.

In normal doses, vitamin D is safe. However, according to experts, taking too much can be harmful and even fatal. It can lead to stomach upset and vomiting, weight loss and loss of appetite, muscle weakness, difficulty thinking clearly or quickly, and heart rhythm problems. Excessive intake is also linked to kidney stones and kidney damage.
