Hack of Knyaz Pozharsky: Ukraine may have exposed vulnerabilities in Russia’s nuclear submarine fleet

Ukrainian intelligence has obtained classified information about Russia’s latest nuclear submarine, the Knyaz Pozharsky. This information could reveal vulnerabilities of other submarines belonging to the aggressor state, The Times reports.
According to the outlet, the Knyaz Pozharsky is Russia’s most advanced strategic nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine of the Borei-A class. It is based in Gadzhievo, Murmansk region, and is part of the Russian Northern Fleet. This type of submarine is a key component of Russia’s nuclear triad.
According to The Times, through a cyber breach, Ukrainian intelligence may have uncovered vulnerabilities not only of this particular submarine but of the entire fleet of Borei-class submarines, which play a strategic role for Russia in the Arctic.
Journalists point out that over the past decade, Russia has significantly increased its military and economic presence in the Arctic. The region holds strategic value due to its rich but largely undeveloped natural resources, as well as newly emerging maritime routes.
In particular, Russian strategic submarines regularly conduct under-ice patrols in the Arctic region to showcase military strength. At the same time, the country is actively developing natural resources, including oil, gas, and mineral raw materials.
The Northern Fleet, which oversees the Borei-class submarines, regularly conducts exercises in Arctic conditions, including under-ice navigation.
Knyaz Pozharsky
Knyaz Pozharsky belongs to the Project 955A Borei-A class of nuclear submarines and is considered one of the most advanced units within Russia’s nuclear triad. It is distinguished by its high stealth capabilities, good maneuverability, and significant strike potential.
The submarine is equipped with 16 launch tubes for R-30 Bulava missiles, each capable of carrying up to ten nuclear warheads.
On Sunday, August 3, it was reported that the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense had obtained classified information about Russia’s new nuclear submarine.
