Google adds new reading feature for iPhone: How it works

The Google app on iOS has received a new feature called "Simplify." It is designed to make technically complex texts easier to understand, particularly those users encounter in search results or the Google Discover feed, 9to5Google reports.
What is known about the new feature
When highlighting a complex text fragment containing professional terminology or technical concepts, a new option appears in the "More actions" panel — Simplify (alongside the familiar "Search" and "Translate" functions).
After tapping it, a panel opens with a simplified version of the selected text, "helping you quickly understand a new concept so you can keep reading."
The feature is powered by the Gemini 1.5 model, specifically trained to simplify texts as accurately as possible without losing meaning. Unlike ordinary summarization or explanation, the model rephrases complex ideas without introducing errors or omitting key details.
The goal is to make content more accessible while preserving its original meaning and scientific accuracy.
According to internal testing by Google, users found the simplified versions of texts significantly more useful and informative than the originals. The testing was conducted on examples from fields such as medicine, biology, law, finance, literature, philosophy, aerospace, and computer science.
