The head of the Bundestag's defense committee, Thomas Rövekamp, called on NATO to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons and asked for permission to destroy Russian drones as they approach its airspace, N-TV reports.

Rövekamp is calling for a much more decisive response to the mass violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. The CDU politician has spoken out in favor of supplying Ukraine with long-range weapons.

He stresses that in the current war, the best way to combat drones is to destroy their production facilities and launchers. Therefore, NATO partners must quickly equip Ukraine so that it can act against these targets on Russian territory.

In addition, Rövekamp urged not to wait until Russian drones reach NATO airspace to start fighting them.

Rövekamp explains that with the permission of the country concerned, such as Ukraine, it should be possible to neutralize drones that pose a threat to NATO territory already in its airspace.

Russia's attack on Poland

On the night of September 10, during a large-scale Russian attack, about 20 Russian drones crossed Polish airspace. Air defense systems shot down only 4 Russian drones.

This was the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that Russian drones were not only detected in NATO territory but also shot down.

According to the latest data, the wreckage of 16 drones was found on Polish territory, one of which fell on a military base.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the Alliance's response very successful, noting that the night showed the organization's readiness to defend every inch of its territory, including its airspace.

In addition, at Poland's request, NATO has now invoked Article 4, which allows member states to discuss the situation with allies in the North Atlantic Council.
