Germany to transfer 6 IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine - Reuters
Germany will transfer six more IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine, according to Reuters.
According to a source from the agency, Germany is adhering to its plan to deliver 12 IRIS-T SLM air defense systems to Ukraine. It is known that four units have already been delivered, two more are expected by the end of the year, and the remaining six will be delivered later.
IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled) is a modern surface-to-air missile system designed to protect against aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. The system was developed by the German company Diehl Defence and is one of the most advanced in the world.
Key features of IRIS-T:
- Modularity: IRIS-T can integrate with various radar and command systems, providing flexibility in deployment.
- Range: Up to 40 km, depending on the type of threat.
- High precision: The use of infrared sensors allows to steer the missile on the target precisely even in conditions of electronic interference.
- Mobility: The system is mounted on mobile platforms, allowing for quick repositioning to protect different objects.
Importance for Ukraine
IRIS-T is critically important for defending against Russian air attacks. This system helps intercept various threats, including cruise missiles, reducing harm to civilians and infrastructure.
Support from Germany
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany has been a leading provider of military aid to Ukraine, particularly in supplying air defense systems, tanks, and armored vehicles. The previous military aid package was delivered by Germany on August 19.
Germany also recently announced the delivery of an additional Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
